In Texas we have this handy dandy standard:
and it has been left so open-ended that it be interpreted any number of ways. I know that in class we’re always evaluating images and maps. They will come up eventually, so I will not have to worry about hitting the standard that way. But I don’t think I’ll have another opportunity to go over an infographic. And even if I do, infographics are fun.
So what better way to kill two birds with one stone: handle the standard while also gauging what the kids know and where I need to focus when it comes to essay writing.
I love infographics, but I’m not good at creating them, so I went on the hunt for one. And I found this one that was perfect.
It’s honestly a terms worth of information boiled down into one image. And I figure that if they know what’s on this infographic, then all I have to worry about is refining the information they know. Win Win. And if someone has a lack of understanding, then I’ve identified someone who needs intervention.
Now, I needed some way to access whether or not the students have GLEAN(ed) information as well as all those other fabulous verbs that are in that standard. And I’m so sick of fill in the blank comprehension worksheets. I figured since this is something that is not super interesting, the least I could do is let them have a bit of autonomy. So I created a choose your own assessment handout, where kids have a choice on how many points they earned based on how up on Bloom’s they go. Each Remember question is worth 5 points (4 questions), Understand is worth 10 points (3 questions), Apply is worth 15 points (4 questions), Analyze is worth 30 points (3 questions), Create is worth 100 points (3 questions). The goal is to get to 100 points. If you’re interested in the handout I created, you can visit my TPT store here.
But there are so many ways to assess the knowledge from this infographic. I hope you can find a way to incorporate it into your classroom.
